The Bikes - 1000 TT1

By 1982 the Laverda air-cooled triple had almost reached the end of its competitive life in top level competition. This final incarnation of a Laverda works triple was built for the Italian Formula 1 series where it was hoped success on the track would help build the sporting image of the factory’s new RGS roadster.
The  motor was developed by Augusto Brettoni using his considerable racing experience and mechanical knowledge.  The 120 degree engine responded particularly well to tuning and with careful attention to cam profiles coupled with larger valves, high compression pistons and 36mm carbs the venerable triple yielded an honest 105bhp in works trim.

Equipped with a cro-moly frame and other chassis improvements the RGSTT1 tipped the scales at a svelte [for the class] 400lbs and its early race outings suggested it had good potential . Shortly after the machine’s debut the FIM reduced the F1 capacity limit to 750cc and the RGSTT1’s short race career was effectively over. It was the last of the mighty works Laverdas and marked the end of a racing dynasty which had started  three decades earlier with the diminutive singles.
